Manang Welcomes First Snowfall of Winter Season

The mountainous district of Manang experienced its first snowfall of the winter, bringing relief and joy to the locals after a prolonged wait. Snow, which had been anticipated since November-December, has now blanketed the hills, marking the much-awaited arrival of winter.

Kishan Mukhiya Gurung, a resident of Nesyang Rural Municipality-1, expressed optimism, noting that the snowfall is beneficial for crops, as it keeps the soil moist and fertile. He highlighted its importance for cultivating medicinal plants such as Yarsagumba (Ophiocordyceps sinensis), Panchaule (Dactylorhiza hatagirea), and Chiraito (Swertia chirayita).

Yagya Ghale of Tachai, Naso Rural Municipality-8, pointed out the snowfall’s significance for the tourism sector. The delayed winter had discouraged visitors, but the fresh snow is expected to draw more tourists to the region. “Although the snowfall is not heavy, it is a good start,” he said.

Despite the excitement, Thuten Lama, Ward Chair of Naso Rural Municipality-5, noted that lower Manang has yet to see snowfall. This poses challenges for winter crops like potatoes, buckwheat, and barley, as snowfall serves as a critical source of irrigation in these areas.

The snowfall is seen as a welcome change, with locals hopeful for improved agricultural prospects and a boost to tourism in the district.
