Martyrs’ Week Begins with Tribute to Shukraraj Shastri

The annual Martyrs’ Week commenced today, honoring those who sacrificed their lives for the establishment of democracy in Nepal. The week-long program is organized in collaboration with the Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC).
On the first day, Deputy Mayor of KMC, Sunita Dangol, along with other city officials and locals, paid floral tributes to Shukraraj Shastri at his statue in Teku.
Shukraraj Shastri, born in Varanasi in 1950 BS, was a prominent figure in the movement against the Rana oligarchy. Through his religious and social activities, he raised awareness about the oppressive regime. Arrested in Indrachowk, Kathmandu, he was imprisoned and later executed by hanging at Teku Pachali on Magh 10, 1997 BS.
The site of his execution, preserved by the former Kathmandu Nagar Panchayat in 2035 BS, now features an inscription and serves as a venue for commemorative events.
Martyrs’ Week continues to serve as a reminder of the sacrifices made by individuals like Shastri for the nation’s democratic aspirations.
