Massive Fraud Uncovered: Fake Office of World Food Programme Exposed in Nepal
In a shocking revelation, fraudsters in Nepal have devised a new and audacious method of deception by establishing a counterfeit international non-governmental organization. The Kathmandu Police made a significant breakthrough in the case, busting the fraudulent operation and apprehending the perpetrators.
Operating under the guise of the World Food Programme (WFP), the fraudulent office was located in the VIP area of Kathmandu, set up in a rented two-storey concrete house. The masterminds behind the scam rented the property for a staggering monthly Rent of 180,000 rupees.
The police investigation led to the identification and arrest of the main culprits involved in the elaborate scam. Among those implicated were the office chief and deputy secretary, Jairam KC, office manager and branch officer, Pemba Tamang, public relations officer, Akash Rai, and technical engineer, Dipesh Gurung.
The perpetrators took their audacious deception to extreme levels, pretending to be employees of the Nepal government. To lend credibility to their ruse, they hired employees who were to be appointed later and even forged official stamps and letter pads of the genuine WFP. In addition, they published counterfeit advertisements for tenders’ worth crores of rupees in various national dailies.
A complaint has been lodged with the police by Shankar Aryal, who rents out Scorpio cars, Bishwa Bahadur Gurung, the owner of the house, and Hari Prasad Aryal, who manages bids and supplies desktops, computers, and laptops. Additionally, Navraj Pandey, a supplier of stationery items, and Dipendra Dharel, who provides carpets, curtains, chairs, tables, drawers, and other essentials, have also reported the incident.
The deceitful scheme managed to swindle approximately 1 crore rupees from unsuspecting victims. The extent of the damage highlights the audacity and sophistication of the fraudulent operation.
The investigation further exposed the main suspect, Ghanshyam Katuwal, alias Jairam KC, who had previously engaged in similar acts of deception by impersonating prominent officials in various districts of Terai.
While two key individuals have been arrested in connection with the fraud, Bhim Volon alias Dipesh Gurung, Milan Tamang alias Akash Rai, and Pemba Tamang remain at large. The Kathmandu Police continue their relentless pursuit of these absconding culprits.
The Kathmandu Police have been granted a five-day deadline by the Kathmandu District Court to conduct further investigations into the intricate web of deceit. Authorities are determined to bring all those involved to justice and prevent such audacious fraud schemes in the future.
