Mathias Herzog, Son of Legendary Mountaineer Maurice Herzog, Honored in Pokhara
Mathias Herzog, son of the late Maurice Herzog—the first person to summit Mount Annapurna (8,091 meters)—was honored today at an event in Pokhara. Maurice Herzog, a French mountaineer, made history on June 3, 1950, as the first person to conquer Annapurna-I, three years before the first successful ascent of Mount Everest.
The Pokhara Tourism Council organized the event as part of the celebrations for the upcoming Bada Dashain, Tihar, and Chhath festivals. The ceremony was graced by Gandaki Province Minister for Social Development, Bindu Kumar Thapa, who emphasized the government’s commitment to developing the tourism sector, recognizing it as a key driver for the nation’s prosperity.
Council President Taranath Pahari highlighted the need for cooperation among all tourism stakeholders, while former President Bachchuram Tiwari called for the implementation of tourism-friendly policies by the government to further enhance the industry.
Herzog’s honor is seen as a tribute not only to his father’s monumental achievement but also to the legacy of mountaineering that continues to bring global recognition to Nepal’s majestic peaks.
