Monsoon Devastation: 148 Dead in Nepal Floods and Landslides
A total of 148 people have lost their lives in floods and landslides triggered by monsoon rains across various parts of Nepal.
According to Nepal Police Spokesperson and Deputy Inspector General of Police Dan Bahadur Karki, the fatalities occurred since the monsoon began on June 10. The breakdown of deaths by province is as follows: three in Kathmandu Valley, 25 in Koshi Province, six in Madhes, 29 in Bagmati, 42 in Gandaki, 25 in Lumbini, eight in Karnali, and 10 in Sudurpaschim Province.
During this period, a significant number of injuries were also reported. Ten people were injured in Kathmandu Valley, 37 in Koshi, 10 in Madhes, 10 in Bagmati, 34 in Gandaki, 10 in Lumbini, 51 in Karnali, and 14 in Sudurpaschim Province.
Rescue operations have been ongoing, with 26 people rescued in Kathmandu Valley, 49 in Koshi, 12 in Bagmati, 14 in Gandaki, two in Karnali, and five in Sudurpaschim Province. However, several people remain missing: two in Koshi, 42 in Bagmati, two in Gandaki, and one in Karnali Province.
The disaster has also caused extensive damage to infrastructure and property. A total of 383 houses have been submerged due to floods, while 255 houses, 91 sheds, 43 bridges, two schools, and two government offices were damaged. Additionally, 715 cattle have perished in the disaster, and 4,112 households have been displaced during this period, according to Spokesperson DIG Karki.
The impact of the monsoon rains underscores the need for continued vigilance and preparedness to mitigate the effects of such natural disasters in the future.
