Nation Celebrates Ram Nawami with Devotion and Festivities

The festival of Ram Nawami is being celebrated with religious fervor across Nepal today, with devotees thronging temples dedicated to Lord Shri Ramchandra to offer prayers and participate in rituals.

The day marks the birth of Lord Ramchandra, believed to have been born on Chaitra Shukla Nawami in the Treta Yuga to King Dasharatha and Queen Kausalya in the ancient city of Ayodhya. Lord Ram is revered as the seventh incarnation of Lord Vishnu and is celebrated as the embodiment of truth, virtue, and righteousness.

According to Prof. Dr. Ramchandra Gautam, Chairperson of the Nepal Calendar Determination and Development Committee, the festival is not only a religious observance but also a source of inspiration for good governance and moral leadership, symbolized by Lord Ram.

Devotees are observing the day by fasting, taking ritual baths in holy rivers and ponds, and reciting verses from the Ramayana, with bhajan (devotional song) sessions continuing through the night. The celebration is especially vibrant in Janakpur, where devotees from both Nepal and India gather at the historic Ram Janaki Temple for a grand fair and Ramlila performances—a traditional dramatization of Lord Ram’s life.

President and Vice President Extend Greetings

On the occasion, President Ramchandra Paudel extended his heartfelt best wishes to all Nepalis at home and abroad, expressing hope that such traditional festivals will play a vital role in preserving Nepal’s ancient culture and heritage.

“Festivals like Ram Nawami, rooted in our centuries-old traditions, help deepen mutual trust, goodwill, tolerance, and cooperation among our diverse communities, thereby strengthening national unity,” President Paudel said in his message.

Similarly, Vice President Ram Sahay Prasad Yadav conveyed his best wishes and emphasized the relevance of Lord Ram’s ideals in modern times.

“Ram Nawami is more than a festival—it is a call to connect our lives with the values of truth, justice, and service exemplified by Lord Ram,” said Vice President Yadav. “May this occasion inspire us all to work collectively for the unity, progress, and prosperity of our nation.”

To mark the occasion, the federal government has declared a public holiday across the country.
