National ID Mandatory for Real Estate Transactions

The government has announced that starting January 14, 2025, national identity cards will be mandatory for real estate transactions. The Ministry of Home Affairs issued a notice in the gazette, stating that the new requirement replaces the previously required citizenship certificate.

Joint Secretary and Spokesperson Narayan Prasad Bhattarai explained that this measure aims to fully implement the national identity card system. Additionally, the ID will be required for various services, including banking, social security, health insurance, pension, tax registration, driver’s licenses, and company registrations across different districts.

From January 14, 2025, a national identity card will also be necessary to obtain a SIM card for mobile phone services. The notice emphasizes that for all public services provided by government and private sectors, a national identity card or national identity number will be required instead of a citizenship certificate.
