Navaratri Festival Commences in Nepal, Ghatasthapana Observed
The nine-night festival of “Navaratri,” known locally as Bada Dashain and one of the most significant celebrations for Hindus in Nepal, has officially begun today. The first day, Ghatasthapana, marks the start of the festival and falls on Ashwin Shukla Pratipada, the first day of the bright half of the lunar month Asoj or Kartik.
The Nepal Calendar Determination Committee has set the auspicious time for observing Ghatasthapana at 9:16 AM today. On this day, the goddess Shailaputri is worshipped, marking the beginning of a series of rituals devoted to various deities, including Brahmacharini, Chandraghanta, Kushmanda, Skandamata, Katyayani, Kalaratri, Mahagauri, and Siddhiratri.
Traditionally, Ghatasthapana is observed by preparing “Jamara” (barley shoots) for the festival. People sow maize and barley seeds in a pot filled with soil and cow dung for germination, a ritual that symbolizes prosperity. Devotees also offer prayers to Durga Bhavani, the goddess of power, to seek blessings.
At Hanumandhoka Dashain Ghar in Kathmandu, the germination of Jamara was initiated today following Vedic rituals.
The highlight of the festival, Dashain Phulpati, will be observed on October 9, with the Nepal Calendar Committee setting the most auspicious time for Dashain tika at 11:36 AM on October 12.
