NC supports government for national consensus, not for power sharing

Nepali Congress Spokesperson Dr Prakash Sharan Mahat has said the party decided to support the government led by CPN (Maoist Centre) Chair Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ for the national consensus.

In his address to a press meet organised by the Nepal Press Union, Banke here today, the Spokesperson of the major opposition said the party gave a vote of confidence to the government at the call of the Prime Minister and it was for cultivating the ground for national consensus, not for joining the government.

“The party hoped to see the wider consensus in the elections of the Speaker, President and so on while supporting the government.”

The NC spokesperson said: “We will play the role of opposition in the parliament being based on the government’s performance. Our support to the government does not mean that we will be joining the government.”

According to the leader, the Prime Minister assured the party that he would be there for the protection of the Constitution and create and cultivate a ground for the broader political understanding. “We will test whether he will up to his promises or not.”

The President is constitutionally the Patron of the Constitution and the party will have its claim on the Presidential post. However, party President Sher Bahadur Deuba will not be the candidate for the Presidential elections. It will either party senior leader Ram Chandra Poudel or other interests leaders. The party will decide on the matter at an appropriate time, according to Mahat.

As he claimed, the alliance between the party and the CPN (Maoist Centre) was collapsed due to some political miscalculation and the party’s claim for the Prime Minister was never intended to hurt the alliance.
