‘NC to Assume Role of Constructive Opposition’
In the wake of the recent coalition formation between the CPN (Maoist Center) and CPN-UML, the Nepali Congress (NC) has announced a strategic shift in its political stance, declaring its intent to assume the role of a “constructive opposition.”
Following discussions among NC leaders, General Secretary Gagan Kumar Thapa emphasized that the party would redirect its energies towards fortifying its organizational structure. This decision comes after Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal’s unexpected move to form a new coalition government, catching the NC off guard.
During a meeting of office-bearers, NC President Sher Bahadur Deuba expressed gratitude for what he described as a revealing moment, stating that Dahal’s actions had served to awaken the party to potential betrayals. “We would have been in a difficult situation had he betrayed us during the election,” Deuba remarked, highlighting the critical nature of recent political developments.
To chart their course ahead, the NC has convened a central work performance meeting slated for 3 pm on Tuesday. According to Thapa, this gathering will serve as a platform to deliberate on the party’s future strategies and address pertinent political concerns.
With the realignment in government dynamics, NC’s nine ministers, including a deputy prime minister, are set to vacate their positions automatically. Among these are notable figures such as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Defence Purna Bahadur Khadka, Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Dhanraj Gurung, and Minister for Finance Dr Prakash Sharan Mahat.
