Nepal and Bangladesh Discuss Trade and Investment Linkages

The Embassy of Nepal in Dhaka hosted a program on “Trade and Investment Linkages between Nepal and Bangladesh” on Wednesday, highlighting the growing economic engagements between the two countries.
In his welcome address, Nepal’s Ambassador to Bangladesh, Ghanshyam Bhandari, emphasized the progress made in trade, connectivity, energy, and tourism. He referred to the recent first-ever export of 40 MW of hydroelectricity from Nepal to Bangladesh, underscoring that energy cooperation benefits not just both nations but the entire South Asian region. The Ambassador encouraged Bangladeshi business leaders to collaborate with their Nepali counterparts and explore investment opportunities in Nepal.
Speaking as the Special Guest, Sushil Gyewali, Chief Executive Officer of Investment Board Nepal, outlined Nepal’s investment climate and key priority sectors, including energy, tourism, agriculture, information technology, urban infrastructure, health, manufacturing, and mining. He also highlighted Nepal’s strategic initiatives to attract foreign direct investment.
Dr. Khandoker Azizul Islam, Executive Member of the Bangladesh Investment Development Authority (BIDA), discussed Bangladesh’s investment priorities and expressed a commitment to strengthening economic ties with Nepal. Similarly, Abdul Awal Mintoo, Chairman of the National Bank Ltd. and former President of the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI), shared insights on doing business in Nepal and emphasized the need to enhance bilateral trade and investment.
During an interactive session, Ambassador Bhandari and CEO Gyewali addressed participants’ concerns, fostering discussions on deepening economic cooperation. The event brought together prominent Bangladeshi business leaders, including representatives from FBCCI and the Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI).
