Nepal Imports Petroleum Products Worth Over Rs 122 Billion Through Birgunj

Nepal imported petroleum products worth Rs 122.2 billion through the Birgunj border transit point in the first eight months of the current fiscal year 2024/25. The imports included diesel, petrol, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), aviation turbine fuel (ATF), and kerosene.
Compared to the same period last fiscal year, the value of petroleum imports increased by Rs 1.67 billion. In the first eight months of the fiscal year 2023/24, petroleum imports were valued at Rs 120.53 billion.
Deepak Lamichhane, the Chief Customs Administrator at Birgunj Customs Office, attributed the rise in imports to increased infrastructure development activities. He also noted a corresponding increase in revenue from petroleum imports.
The Customs Office collected Rs 50.13 billion in revenue from petroleum imports in the current fiscal year, compared to Rs 44.80 billion in the same period last year.
According to the data, 685,991 kiloliters of diesel worth Rs 61.45 billion were imported, generating Rs 27.31 billion in revenue. Similarly, 290,382 kiloliters of petrol worth Rs 25.30 billion were imported, contributing Rs 16.48 billion to the revenue.
Additionally, 210.04 million kilograms of LPG worth Rs 24.05 billion were imported, with revenue collections totaling Rs 4.5 billion. In comparison, 186.81 million kilograms of LPG worth Rs 19.52 billion were imported during the same period last fiscal year.
The increasing import of petroleum products underscores Nepal’s growing energy needs, driven by infrastructure expansion and rising industrial activities.
