The 18th edition of the Nepal-India joint military exercise, Suryakiran, is set to commence on Tuesday at Saljhandi in Rupandehi. This battalion-level exercise aims to achieve common security objectives and deepen bilateral ties between the two neighboring countries.
The two-week training will involve Nepal’s Shree Jung Battalion and India’s 11th Gorkha Rifles. It will focus on critical areas such as jungle warfare, counter-terrorism operations in challenging terrains, UN-mandated peacekeeping efforts, disaster management, humanitarian assistance, internal capacity building, environmental protection, and enhancing military capabilities in demanding scenarios.
According to Nepali Army spokesperson Gaurav Kumar KC, the exercise not only strengthens the professional cooperation between the armies but also fosters friendship, trust, and shared cultural ties between Nepal and India.
The Suryakiran series of military exercises has been held annually since 2067 BS, alternating between the two countries. Last year’s 17th edition took place in Pithoragarh, India. To date, 4,215 Nepali Army soldiers and 4,442 Indian Army soldiers have participated in these drills, reflecting the enduring collaboration between the two armies.
The current exercise will continue until December 11, contributing to regional security and the enhancement of operational readiness in both countries.
