Nepal Medical College Doctors Stage Walkout, Demand Safety Amidst Rising Assaults

In a show of solidarity with their colleagues at Manipal Teaching Hospital in Pokhara, resident doctors from Nepal Medical College in Jorpati, Kathmandu, have suspended all services and conducted a protest outside their hospital.

The resident doctors announced the service suspension, citing concerns over the safety of healthcare workers and a demoralizing work environment amidst growing instances of assaults on medical professionals.

Nepal Medical College confirmed the closure of their Outpatient Department (OPD) services for the day. Non-emergency patients were advised to return on the following day due to the ongoing doctors’ strike.

The recent wave of protests and strikes was sparked by the tragic death of a woman from Lamjung while undergoing treatment at Manipal Teaching Hospital. Allegations of negligence led to a violent incident involving the deceased’s relatives and hospital staff, prompting police to make an arrest in connection with the assault on a doctor.

This incident follows a similar attack on two doctors in Hetauda a few weeks ago, underscoring the urgent need for measures to protect healthcare professionals in Nepal.
