Nepal Records 34.1% Drop in Smoking
The World Statistics released data on Monday indicating a remarkable 34.1% decrease in the number of smokers in Nepal between the years 2000 and 2020. This notable reduction positions Nepal as a global leader in the campaign against smoking, outperforming 43 other countries included in the statistics.
Comparatively, on a global scale, the data reveals an overall decrease of 11.19% in the number of smokers. Nepal’s substantial achievement underscores the effectiveness of anti-smoking measures implemented by the government and various health organizations.
Noteworthy is the fact that neighboring countries, India and China, experienced a decrease of 27.3% and 1.1%, respectively. However, the global report also highlights the concerning trends in some nations, such as Egypt, where the number of smokers has seen a 4.1% increase, and Jordan, where smoking rates have risen by 1.1%.
Experts attribute Nepal’s success in curbing smoking rates to a combination of comprehensive public health initiatives, awareness campaigns, and stringent tobacco control policies. The country’s achievement in reducing the prevalence of smoking serves as an inspiring example for others worldwide, encouraging a continued global effort toward creating tobacco-free societies.
As the world grapples with the health and economic burdens associated with smoking-related illnesses, Nepal’s success story stands as a testament to the impact of proactive measures in promoting public health and reducing the prevalence of tobacco use.
