Nepal Remains Committed to Sustainable Development Goals, Says Foreign Minister Amidst Progress Challenges

Nepal’s Foreign Minister, N.P. Saud, reaffirmed the country’s commitment to prioritizing human development through substantial investments in education and health during his address at the Regional Human Development Report-2024 public function organized by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Kathmandu on Tuesday.

Minister Saud highlighted that Nepal’s periodic development plans consistently underscore the crucial role of enhancing human capacity. He emphasized the incorporation of human development principles into the nation’s broader development strategies and programs.

Addressing the gathering, Saud stated, “The Human Development Index is one of the three criteria for upgrading from a least developed country, and we achieved this milestone years ago.” This accomplishment reflects Nepal’s dedication to advancing the well-being of its citizens and elevating its status on the global development stage.

Acknowledging the potential challenges to Nepal’s progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Minister Saud expressed confidence in the government’s unwavering commitment. He noted that external and internal factors might contribute to fluctuations in SDG achievements but reassured that Nepal’s commitment remains strong. Comparing the progress with Millennium Goals, he acknowledged some instability but underscored ongoing sincere efforts.

The Foreign Minister drew attention to the imminent dangers posed by climate change, emphasizing the specific challenges faced by Himalayan region countries. He highlighted the centrality of this concern in the recently concluded COP-28, emphasizing the need for collaborative efforts to address the impacts of climate change on vulnerable regions.

Discussing the government’s initiatives for the youth, Saud emphasized providing quality education, skill enhancement, and a supportive environment for entrepreneurship. Recognizing the predominantly youthful population of Nepal as a valuable asset, he stated, “We are striving to offer our youth quality education, skill development, and an environment conducive to entrepreneurship. We appreciate the ongoing support from important partners like UNDP in our mission.”

As Nepal continues to focus on human development goals, the Foreign Minister’s remarks underscore the nation’s commitment to building a resilient and sustainable future for its citizens. The event served as a platform to reinforce international collaboration and garner support for Nepal’s ongoing initiatives in the realm of human development.
