Nepal Secures Bronze Medal in the 27th International Astronomy Olympiad

Kathmandu, Nov 17: Nepal’s representation at the 27th International Astronomy Olympiad in Beijing, China, proved to be successful as Drishanta Kumar Maharjan clinched the bronze medal for the country. The Olympiad, held from November 6 to 14, saw enthusiastic participation from around the world, with Nepal making its mark in the prestigious event.

Suresh Kumar Bhattarai, the president of the Nepal Astronomical Society, proudly announced the achievement, emphasizing the significance of Nepal’s participation in such global competitions. This marks Nepal’s second bronze medal in the International Astronomy Olympiad, with a previous win in 2019.

The Nepal Astronomical Society has been actively involved in fostering interest and expertise in astronomy among Nepali students. Since 2018, the society has consistently participated in the Olympiad, providing a platform for talented individuals to showcase their astronomical knowledge and skills.

Drishanta Kumar Maharjan’s achievement adds to Nepal’s growing reputation in the field of astronomy. The National Astronomy Olympiad, initiated in 2014, serves as a steppingstone for students to represent Nepal on the international stage. This year’s success follows Nepal’s participation in the Olympiad since 2014, resulting in a total of 12 honorary medals and two bronze medals for the country.

Suresh Kumar Bhattarai highlighted that Nepali students have also secured three honorary medals in the International Astronomy and Astrophysics Olympiad-Junior, established in 2022. The continuous success in international competitions reflects the dedication and potential of Nepal’s young astronomers, contributing to the nation’s growing presence in the global astronomy community.
