Nepal Seeks UN Support for Technology and Sustainable Tourism Development

Nepal has called on the United Nations to assist in advancing technology and promoting sustainable tourism.
A delegation from the Nepal Tourism Board (NTB), currently on a European tour, made this appeal during a meeting with UN Tourism officials in Madrid, Spain. Led by Binod Prakash Singh, Secretary at the Ministry of Culture, Tourism, and Civil Aviation, the delegation acknowledged the UN’s past support and requested further collaboration in areas such as artificial intelligence, digital innovation, and sustainable tourism development.
During discussions with Harry Hwang, Director of the Regional Department for Asia and the Pacific at the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), Nepal’s delegation highlighted the significance of their visit as the first official mission to the UN Tourism Headquarters. Hwang reaffirmed the UN’s commitment to supporting Nepal and encouraged the country to actively participate in UN tourism initiatives, submitting formal proposals outlining its priorities for additional assistance.
Dr. Narayan Prasad Regmi, Director General of Nepal’s Department of Tourism, emphasized Nepal’s dedication to strengthening its partnership with UN Tourism to enhance bilateral tourism relations. He noted that Nepal seeks the organization’s support to refine its tourism policies, promote inclusive tourism, and ensure equitable distribution of tourism benefits.
Representatives from NTB showcased Nepal’s vast potential in adventure tourism, eco-tourism, and rural tourism, stressing the need for UN-backed projects to elevate the country’s tourism industry.
Before the meeting, NTB hosted a promotional event in collaboration with the Nepali Embassy in Spain, highlighting Nepal’s tourism attractions. The event, aimed at strengthening tourism ties between Nepal and Spain, was attended by travel industry entrepreneurs and media representatives.
Speaking at the event, Nepal’s Ambassador to Spain, Sanil Nepal, highlighted the long-standing diplomatic ties between the two nations. NTB Senior Manager Khadga Bikram Shah delivered a presentation showcasing Nepal’s natural beauty, adventure tourism, cultural heritage, and hospitality services, positioning Nepal as a prime travel destination for Spanish tourists.
