Nepal Telecom Expands Services at Korala Border with China
Nepal Telecom (NT) has officially expanded its mobile and internet services to Korala, the border crossing with Tibet’s Autonomous Region in China. The new service, which began operating on Tuesday, includes the installation of Base Transceiver Station (BTS) towers to facilitate 2G and 4G connectivity for local residents and traders.
Santosh Baral, the head of Nepal Telecom in Baglung, confirmed that the expansion aims to enhance communication capabilities at the Korala border trade transit point. Tasinrbu Gurung, Chair of the Lomanthang Rural Municipality, highlighted the positive impact of this development, stating that the improved communication infrastructure will significantly benefit locals, traders, security personnel, customs officials, and anyone visiting the border area.
The Korala border point has seen enhanced infrastructure since the extension of the central transmission line’s electricity facility in April last year. This initiative came into operation a year ago, further supporting local trade and connectivity.
Chief District Officer Janak Raj Panta mentioned that preparations are underway to establish immigration, customs, and security agency offices in buildings funded by the Gandaki Province government.
Residents from nearby areas, including Lomanthang, Waragung Muktikshetra, Gharpajhong, Thasang, Loghekar, and Damodarkunda rural municipalities in Mustang, frequently travel to Nechung-Litchi in Tibet for trade purposes. The introduction of Nepal Telecom’s services at Korala is expected to facilitate smoother communication and enhance economic activities in the region.
