Nepal to Present Karnali Declaration on Climate Justice at COP29

Minister for Forests and Environment, Ain Bahadur Shahi, has announced that Nepal will present the Karnali Declaration on climate justice at the 2024 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP29), set to take place in Baku, Azerbaijan, next month.

During a pre-COP29 orientation organized by the Climate Change Management Division at Chandragiri, the Minister emphasized Nepal’s preparedness and assured effective participation in the conference. The three-day event began on Wednesday, gathering key stakeholders ahead of the global summit.

Shahi highlighted the importance of the session on Climate Finance at COP29, stressing its critical role for Nepal, a developing country facing significant challenges in addressing climate change without adequate financial backing.

The Karnali Declaration, a five-point agenda on climate justice, was finalized during a workshop held on October 19-20 in Karnali Province. Attended by climate experts and local representatives, the declaration outlines the urgent need for climate action and will be a key element of Nepal’s stance at COP29.

“We must focus on limiting the temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius and promoting clean, sustainable energy resources to meet global Sustainable Development Goals,” Shahi stated.

Minister of State for Forests and Environment, Rupa BK, also stressed that Nepal should assertively call for financial and technical support from developed nations to implement climate-friendly initiatives.

Secretary Deepak Kumar Kharal and representatives from various organizations are also attending the event.
