Nepalese Film ‘Shambhala’ Triumphs at Locarno Film Festival, Actress Thinle Lhamo Wins Best Acting Award
The Nepalese film Shambhala, directed by Meen Bahadur Bham, has won international acclaim at the 77th edition of the Locarno Film Festival in Switzerland. Actress Thinle Lhamo, who stars in the film, was honored with the prestigious Boccalino d’Oro award for her exceptional performance in the category of ‘Best Acting Performance.’
Director Meen Bahadur Bham expressed his joy over Lhamo’s achievement, stating that the award serves as a significant inspiration for emerging artists in Nepal. He dedicated this success to the filmmakers of Nepal and the inspiring, smart, and energetic women of the Himalayan region.
Shambhala explores the complex and culturally rich practice of polygamy in Nepal’s western Himalayan region. Alongside Thinle Lhamo, the film features performances by actors Sonam Topdre, Tenzing Dalhal, and Karma Shakya.
The film was shot at challenging altitudes ranging from 4,200 to 6,000 meters in the remote and picturesque region of Dolpa, adding to the authenticity and depth of the story. The international recognition at the Locarno Film Festival marks a proud moment for Nepalese cinema and highlights the country’s growing presence on the global film stage.
