Nepali Leaders Trying Their Luck in Films

The link between Nepal’s film industry and politics is getting stronger. Actors are making their way in politics, while politicians are trying their luck in films.

Famous faces like Komal Oli and Rekha Thapa have shifted gears from acting to politics. Bhuwan KC’s attempt at politics didn’t go as planned, and we’re still waiting to hear about Rajesh Hamal’s possible entry into politics.

But the twist doesn’t end there. Political leaders are stepping into the glamour of the entertainment world. KP Sharma Oli, the CPN-UML Chairman and former Prime Minister, is now part of a movie called ‘Rato Surya,’ directed by Dipendra Dahal. The film has been in the making for five years!

Oli is not stopping with just one film. He’s also going to be in ‘Nametine Ghau,’ directed by Ramit Dhungana, where he’ll play the role of a Prime Minister. Joining him in the movie is Gyanendra Shahi, a lawmaker and RPP spokesperson, although we’re still waiting to find out more about his role.

Even local leaders are joining in on the fun. Harka Sampang, the mayor of Dharan, will have a short appearance in ‘Khajure Bro.’ The production team mentioned he’ll be in a one-minute scene.

People often complain that the government doesn’t pay enough attention to the Nepali film industry. But with political leaders getting involved, some hope this could help the government understand the challenges faced by the film sector better. Maybe this could lead to more support for the movies!
