Nepali MP Dr. Anjan Shakya Elected to IPU Sustainable Development Committee

National Assembly member Dr. Anjan Shakya has been elected to the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Standing Committee on Sustainable Development, marking a historic first for Nepal.

Dr. Shakya secured the position representing the Asia-Pacific region during the 150th IPU Assembly held in Tashkent, the capital of Uzbekistan. She triumphed over candidates from the Maldives and Iran, becoming the first Nepali parliamentarian to be elected to the committee.

Speaking after her election, Dr. Shakya expressed pride in the achievement, stating that her appointment not only reflected personal success but also contributed to elevating Nepal’s stature on the international stage.

Dr. Shakya currently serves as a member of the National Assembly’s Committee on Development, Economic Affairs, and Good Governance, and is also the coordinator of its Sustainable Development Sub-Committee.

The IPU Standing Committee on Sustainable Development focuses on key global issues such as fair trade, environmental protection, and development financing, aiming to enhance the well-being of people and the planet, according to the IPU’s official website.

The 150th IPU Assembly, which began on April 5, will continue through April 9, with Speaker Devraj Ghimire leading Nepal’s delegation.
