Nepal’s Khagendra GC elected as vice president of Socialist International

Khagendra GC, a US-based Nepali lawyer has been elected as the vice president of Socialist International, a common organization of socialists around the world.

The conference held in Madrid, Spain, from November 25 to 27, unanimously elected GC.

Similarly, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez was also unanimously named as president of the Socialist International (SI) on Friday.

GC has become the third Nepali to become the vice president of Socialist International.

Earlier, the founding leader of the Congress and former Prime Minister B.P Koirala and the current Chairman and Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba were elected Vice President representing the Nepali Congress.

Bed Prasad Kharel, the former joint- co-coordinator of the US chapter of the Nepali Congress’ public relations committee had also participated in the conference along with GC. Kharel is also a former general committee member of Congress. They both had participated in the conference on behalf of the Nepali Congress representing Nepal.

Khagendra GC had participated as former chairman of the United States chapter of the Nepali Congress’ Nepali Public Relations Committee.

GC and Ved Prasad Kharel spoke on the role of the Nepali Congress, gender equality, and socialist economic growth at the convention. The Spanish Prime Minister Sanchez, during the discussion with GC and Kharel, had recalled the support given to Nepal during the Corona pandemic.

Nepali Congress has been a member of the Socialist International, a common body of socialists worldwide, for a long time.

In order to ensure geographical and gender balance, there use to be 36 vice presidents in the Socialist International. The convention witnessed the participation of 350 people from 117 countries.
