New NRB Governor Dr. Poudel Vows to Safeguard Public Deposits, Strengthen Supervisory Role

Newly appointed Governor of Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB), Dr. Biswo Nath Poudel, has pledged to prioritize the security of public deposits in banks and financial institutions while enhancing loan policy frameworks.

Speaking after assuming office at the NRB headquarters in Baluwatar on Tuesday, Governor Poudel said the central bank would act in alignment with the government’s broader fiscal policy while maintaining its institutional autonomy.

“Monetary policy serves to support the objectives set by fiscal policy. Regulation and supervision are key responsibilities, and instead of enacting numerous stringent rules, we must focus on enhancing the supervisory capacity of the central bank,” Poudel said.

He emphasized that NRB’s policy decisions would be made in consultation with stakeholders. “I believe policy formulation should be based on dialogue. I don’t support unilaterally proposing measures. We will move forward only after thorough discussion with all relevant parties,” he added.

Regarding the resignation of NRB Executive Director Dr. Gunakar Bhatta, Governor Poudel remarked that it was an internal matter of the institution.

As his first official move, Governor Poudel approved a decision to print new Rs. 500 and Rs. 1,000 denomination banknotes.
