NHRC Calls for Peaceful Protests, Condemns Violence in Kathmandu

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has urged all protesting groups to maintain peace and refrain from violence following clashes in Kathmandu’s Tinkune area.

In a statement issued on Friday, the NHRC reported that protests organized by pro-monarchy groups turned violent when demonstrators attempted to breach the restricted area near Nayabaneshwor, resulting in clashes with security forces. Protesters pelted stones at the police, vandalized private homes, and set fire to buildings, including media offices, colleges, and residential properties. Fire engines and police vehicles responding to the situation were also attacked.

The NHRC also confirmed that one of its monitoring team members was injured in an attack by protesters in Koteshwor. Security forces were seen using water cannons, firing warning shots, and deploying tear gas, some of which affected private residences. Additionally, protests led by the Socialist Front at Bhrikuti Mandap obstructed public movement by setting up a stage on the road.

While acknowledging the right to peaceful protest, the NHRC stressed that demonstrations should not infringe upon the rights of others or lead to destruction. It called on the Nepalese government to take legal action against those responsible for violent acts and urged all protesting parties to ensure that future demonstrations remain peaceful.
