NHRC Calls for Press Freedom and Journalists’ Safety on World Press Freedom Day

Marking World Press Freedom Day, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has called on the government and all stakeholders to uphold and protect freedom of expression and press freedom in line with national and international obligations.

In a statement issued Friday, the NHRC urged the authorities to ensure full respect for press freedom as guaranteed by Nepal’s Constitution and international human rights instruments. The commission emphasized that the safety of journalists must be treated as a priority.

Expressing sorrow over recent attacks on media workers, the NHRC mourned the death of journalist Suresh Rajak, who died in a fire during a protest in Tinkune on March 28, and noted the injury sustained by journalist Sabina Karki while covering the recent teachers’ protest in Kathmandu.

The commission reiterated that press freedom is fundamental to democracy and urged stronger protections for media personnel across the country.
