Nihita Biswas: The Girl Who Married ‘Serial Killer’ Charles Sobhraj
Nihita Biswas, born in 1897, to a Bengali-origin businessman father and Shakuntala Thapa, did her school at Kathmandu’s St Mary’s High School and got her law degree from Tribhuvan University, Kirtipur, Nepal.
She is a lawyer and human rights, activist. However, this much is not only enough to complete her identity.
Biswas is known and became famous for marrying a serial killer and that too a man much older than her.
Nihita Biswas is the wife of the French serial killer, Charles Sobhraj.
She met Bikini killer, Sobhraj in prison where she was working as an interpreter for him. They two fell in love with each other at the first sight, according to Charles Sobhraj’s interview in 2008.
Nihita and Charles got engaged within three months of their meeting. At the time of their marriage, Nihita was 21 years old and Sobhraj was 64 years old.
Nihita was also the first Nepali citizen to participate in Bigg Boss season 5.
Charles Sobhraj may be a dreaded criminal to the world but for Nihita Biswas, the man is innocent and has been framed by the investigating agencies. When she got the message of Sobhraj’s release, her joy knew no bounds.
The Supreme Court on Wednesday ordered the release of Charles Sobhraj from jail on the basis of a legal provision that states that prisoners who have completed 75 percent of their jail term and showed good character during imprisonment can be released.
A bench of SC Justices Sapana Pradhan Malla and Til Prasad Shrestha issued an order to release Sobhraj from the central jail in Kathmandu.
Sobhraj, a Frenchman of Indian and Vietnamese parentage committed a string of murders throughout Asia in the 1970s.
He had been lodged in Kathmandu central jail in 2003 on charges of traveling with a false passport and for the murders of American tourist Connie Jo Boronzich, 29, and Canadian Laurent Carrière, 26, in 1975.
He has been implicated in more than 20 killings, served 21 years in prison in India for poisoning a French tourist and killing an Israeli national.
The Supreme Court had sentenced him to life in prison for murdering an American tourist, Connie Joe Bronzich, in 1975 in Nepal. In 2014, he was convicted of killing Laurent Carriere, a Canadian backpacker, and given a second life sentence.
