Over 400 Climbers Secure Permits to Scale Mt Everest This Spring

A total of 402 climbers from 53 countries have obtained permits to summit Mt Everest this spring season, the Department of Tourism announced. Among them, 74 are women.

According to Department Director Liladhar Awasthi, 41 separate expeditions have received permission so far. In comparison, during the same season last year, 414 climbers—75 women and 339 men from 41 expeditions—secured permits to attempt the world’s highest peak.

The government has collected Rs 684 million in royalties from mountaineering permits issued for various peaks this year, a figure expected to rise as more climbers continue to arrive.

To ensure safe and orderly expeditions, the Department has also established a field office at the Everest Base Camp. Over the 72 years since Mt Everest was first conquered, climbers from around the world have continued to set records as they pursue the challenge of reaching its 8,848-meter summit.

Despite the inherent dangers and extreme conditions, the allure of Everest remains strong. One notable climber this season, Tashi Gyaljen Sherpa from Solukhumbu, has set an ambitious goal to summit Everest four times within 20 days in a bid to establish a new record.

To date, more than 8,000 domestic and international climbers have successfully reached the top of Mt Everest, and the trend of pushing new limits shows no signs of slowing.
