Over 50 Arrested, Including RJP President CK Raut
The police detained more than 50 individuals, including Rastriya Janamat Party President CK Raut, who is also a federal lawmaker, for attempting to stage a protest in the prohibited area of Maitighar.
Superintendent of Police Kumud Dhungel, who is also the spokesperson for the District Police Range Kathmandu, reported that 47 men and four women were taken into custody as they tried to organize a demonstration in an area designated as ‘prohibited for protests.’
“We arrested them for trying to stage a demonstration in the prohibited area,” stated Dhungel.
The protestors were marching towards Maitighar, advocating for the observation of ‘Dhoti Day’ alongside ‘Dhaka Topi Day,’ traditionally celebrated on the first day of the English calendar.
All the arrested individuals are currently held at the Metropolitan Police Office in Bhrikutimandap, according to Dhungel.
It is noteworthy that CK Raut leads a political party that is also a part of the government. The incident has sparked discussions on the right to protest and the boundaries set for such activities in the capital.
