Parliamentary Committees Nominate Candidates for Chairperson Positions
Two parliamentary committees under Nepal’s Federal Parliament have received nominations for their vacant chairperson positions, with one candidate nominated for each committee.
The Parliamentary Hearing Committee and the Monitoring and Evaluation of the Implementation of the Directive Principles, Policies and Obligations of the State Committee have nominated Nepali Congress leader Ishwori Devi Neupane and CPN (UML) leader Thakur Prasad Gaire, respectively, for the positions of chairperson.
According to a press statement issued by the Federal Parliament Secretariat’s General-Secretary Padma Prasad Pandey, Neupane, who is also a member of the Parliamentary Hearing Committee, was proposed for the chairpersonship by Shyam Kumar Ghimire and seconded by Sunital Baral.
Similarly, Gaire, a member of the Monitoring and Evaluation Committee, was proposed for the chairperson position by Sarswati Subba, with the proposal seconded by Dilendra Prasad Badu.
The election for the chairpersons of these committees is scheduled for August 15, 2024. The meeting of the committees will see those who proposed the candidates present their proposals for further procedures.
The Parliamentary Hearing Committee has been without a chairperson for nearly a year and a half since the last parliamentary election in November 2022. In the absence of a chairperson, the senior-most member of the committee has been presiding over its meetings.
Meanwhile, the Monitoring and Evaluation of the Implementation of the Directive Principles, Policies and Obligations of the State Committee is a newly formed committee, established on July 31, 2024.
