PM Modi Unveils New Indian Chancery in Brunei, Strengthens Bilateral Ties on Historic Visit
Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the new Chancery of the High Commission of India in Brunei’s capital, Bandar Seri Begawan, on Tuesday. The newly unveiled chancery complex, designed to reflect a blend of traditional Indian motifs and modern aesthetics, features elegant claddings and durable Kota stones, creating a serene and inviting atmosphere.
During the inauguration, PM Modi lit a lamp and unveiled a plaque, symbolizing the deep cultural ties between India and Brunei. He also interacted with members of the Indian community present at the event, praising their role as a vital link between the two nations. The Indian community, which has been in Brunei since the 1920s, currently numbers around 14,000 and is recognized for its significant contributions to Brunei’s healthcare and education sectors.
Arriving in Brunei on a bilateral visit, PM Modi expressed enthusiasm for enhancing commercial and cultural connections between the two countries. He was accorded a ceremonial welcome upon arrival and thanked Crown Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah for his warm reception. In a post on X, PM Modi highlighted his commitment to strengthening ties and fostering new opportunities for collaboration.
The visit is particularly notable as it marks the first bilateral visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Brunei, coinciding with the 40th anniversary of diplomatic relations between India and Brunei. The Ministry of External Affairs emphasized Brunei’s significance in India’s ‘Act East’ Policy and Indo-Pacific Vision, noting the longstanding historical, cultural, and traditional links between the two countries.
Following the Brunei leg of his trip, PM Modi will travel to Singapore on September 4-5 for further engagements.
