PM Oli Calls for Compensation from Carbon-Emitting Nations at UN Event
Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli of Nepal emphasized the need for carbon-emitting countries to compensate non-emitting nations like Nepal for the climate change impacts they face. Addressing a gathering on “Parliamentarians for Fossil Fuel Free” during his participation in the 79th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), PM Oli underscored Nepal’s role in mitigating climate change through its zero-carbon emissions.
“Nepal has actively contributed to reducing climate change impacts, and the countries responsible for carbon emissions must compensate those that bear the consequences,” said Prime Minister Oli. He highlighted the alarming effects of global warming on the Himalayas, including the melting of snow on Sagarmatha (Mt. Everest).
The Prime Minister further urged developed nations to increase funding for climate adaptation as agreed upon in the Paris Agreement, noting, “Our future is bright because we are investing in it.”
Later today, PM Oli is scheduled to meet with UN Secretary-General António Guterres at the UN headquarters to discuss key global issues.
PM Oli’s delegation includes his spouse Radhika Shakya, Minister for Foreign Affairs Arzu Rana Deuba, Chief Advisor Bishnu Prasad Rimal, Foreign Secretary Sewa Lamsal, and other senior officials.
