PM Oli Denies Involvement in Political Splits or Mergers
Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has firmly denied any intention of splitting or merging political parties, emphasizing that such matters are internal to the parties themselves.
Speaking at an event to congratulate the newly elected office bearers of the Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ) at his residence in Baluwatar, Prime Minister Oli dismissed rumors about forwarding an ordinance related to party division. He clarified that while past legal amendments were proposed to address constitutional complications, his government is currently not pursuing such measures.
“In the past, the provision requiring 40 percent support from both the parliamentary party and the central committee for a party split proved impractical. My government forwarded an ordinance reducing this threshold, but it was withdrawn after opposition. Ironically, those who opposed it later facilitated party splits with a 20 percent provision. Now, I have no intention of revisiting this issue,” he said.
PM Oli stressed that the government is focused on national development and serving the people, noting that ordinances recommended to the President are part of this mission. He also criticized misinformation regarding his actions, urging journalists to uphold their professional responsibilities.
The Prime Minister took the opportunity to reiterate his commitment to transparency and hard work. “We are working tirelessly for the nation. Good work can be done openly, regardless of the time of day,” he said, defending his government’s efforts.
He announced plans to draft laws to counter fake news and ensure journalists’ professional security, highlighting the government’s role in safeguarding press freedom and the public’s right to accurate information.
On the occasion, FNJ Chairperson Nirmala Sharma and General Secretary Ram Prasad Dahal raised concerns about press freedom and urged the government to address these issues. Chairperson Sharma noted the historic significance of the FNJ’s new female leadership and emphasized the importance of protecting freedom of expression.
PM Oli congratulated the newly elected FNJ team, expressing hope for constructive collaboration between the government and media in fostering a transparent and informed society.
