PM Oli Highlights Buddhism’s Role in Nepal-China Relations at Nanhai Roundtable
Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli described Buddhism as a “luminous thread” binding Nepal and China during his address at the Ninth Nanhai Buddhism Roundtable Forum in Kathmandu.
“Nepal and China share more than borders; we are united by history, geography, and culture,” said Oli. He emphasized Buddhism’s role in fostering spiritual and cultural ties, calling it a timeless bond of harmony and understanding.
Speaking from Nepal, the birthplace of Gautam Buddha, PM Oli noted the significance of hosting the forum in the sacred land that symbolizes the enduring spiritual connection between the two nations. He praised Buddha’s teachings of love, compassion, and non-violence as a universal guide for humanity, particularly in times of division and materialism.
Highlighting historical exchanges, Oli mentioned the travels of Chinese monks Fa Xian and Xuan Zang to Nepal and the visit of Nepali scholar Buddhabhadra to China, as well as the influence of Nepali-style Buddhist temples in China. He expressed pride in Lumbini Buddhist University’s role in advancing Buddhist studies and its collaboration with China’s Nanhai Buddhist Academy.
“The architectural marvels and scholarly exchanges reflect our shared history and mutual aspirations,” said Oli. He expressed confidence in strengthening cultural and academic partnerships to deepen the legacy of their shared heritage.
Oli also lauded the Nanhai Buddhism Roundtable for its dedication to peace and cultural exchange through its previous forums. He hoped the current chapter would further strengthen ties among Buddhist communities in Nepal, China, and beyond, while championing the values of compassion and cooperation.
The forum will culminate in a Youth Forum and World Peace Prayer Ceremony in Lumbini, aimed at inspiring future generations to uphold Buddha’s teachings.
PM Oli extended his gratitude to the organizers and called for the global Buddhist community to champion love, compassion, and understanding. “May the teachings of Buddha guide humanity toward a harmonious and prosperous world,” he concluded.
