PM Oli Vows to Curb Politics of Hatred and Digital Crime

Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has pledged to curb activities that propagate politics of hatred by dismantling social norms and fostering mistrust within families.

Speaking at the inauguration of an International Conference on Digital Crime organized by the Office of the Attorney General in Kathmandu, PM Oli emphasized that digital technology should serve as a tool for human happiness and prosperity. He affirmed the government’s commitment to enacting laws that promote social decency, preventing the misuse of rights to fuel social anomalies.

The Prime Minister reassured that the government would not introduce any legislation that impedes the right to use social media, but necessary amendments would be made after reviewing the constitution upon the completion of its first decade of implementation.

Highlighting the global nature of digital crimes, PM Oli stressed the importance of international cooperation in combating such offenses, as unilateral efforts by any one country would not suffice. He acknowledged that while digital technology enhances human convenience, its misuse poses a significant challenge to maintaining a civilized society.

“The 20th century has brought remarkable inventions, but these advancements have also been exploited. Organized criminal activities have evolved alongside technological progress. We must harness artificial intelligence (AI) and digital technology to create conditions that deter crimes and enable objective investigations to ensure fair justice,” he stated.

The Prime Minister underscored the importance of promoting good governance and upholding the social and economic rights of citizens to achieve the national vision of ‘Prosperous Nepal, Happy Nepali.’ However, he cautioned against the misuse of these rights, reiterating the government’s resolve to move the country forward by empowering people with their fundamental rights.

Attorney General Ramesh Badal noted that digital crimes, including social media misuse, digital fraud, financial crimes, and data security breaches, are increasingly prevalent, posing significant challenges to law enforcement.

The conference was attended by PM’s Principal Political Advisor Bishnu Prasad Rimal, Senior-most Judge of the Supreme Court Sapana Pradhan Malla, Chief Commissioner of the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) Prem Kumar Rai, and International Association of Prosecutors General Counsel Shenaz Muzaffer, among other dignitaries.
