PM Prachanda Hints at Possible Reversal of TikTok Ban
Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ has suggested the potential lifting of the government’s ban on TikTok. The Prime Minister revealed that the ban was not solely a personal decision but had been influenced by pressure from various political figures, including CPN-UML Chairman KP Oli and Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba.
During an interaction with media editors at Singh Durbar on Monday evening, Prime Minister Dahal disclosed, “There were persistent queries from opposition and ruling party leaders about the government’s stance on TikTok. I resisted the pressure for two months before eventually deciding to impose the ban.”
Prime Minister Dahal expressed concerns about the perceived negative impact of TikTok, citing instances within his own household. He noted, “I observed certain discrepancies, even within my own household. Grandchildren were constantly engaged with TikTok…”
Despite initial public support for the ban on TikTok, the Prime Minister acknowledged the input from civil society and journalists. This signals a potential shift in approach, with PM Dahal indicating a willingness to reopen TikTok under regulations rather than an outright ban.
“The decision to ban was taken at that time, but now, considering the recommendations from civil society and journalists, TikTok can be reopened under regulations,” emphasized PM Dahal during the interaction.
