Police Arrest Man Who Escaped Prison 14 Years Ago by Digging Tunnel

Police in Kapilbastu District have finally apprehended Mohammad School Miya Ansari, also known as School Miya, who escaped from prison over 14 years ago by digging a tunnel with eight other inmates.

According to Superintendent of Police Navaratna Paudel, Ansari was captured in Shivraj Municipality-7 after an extensive search effort. Ansari, originally from Sidharthanagar district in Uttar Pradesh, India, had been serving a sentence for robbery when he and his accomplices dug a 21-foot tunnel from their cell, exiting through the eastern wall of Kapilbastu District Jail on January 16, 2010.

Paudel highlighted the seriousness of tunnel escape incidents, calling them “a serious crime.” He noted that after his transfer to Kapilvastu, the police chief intensified efforts to capture escapees, resulting in the successful arrest of 126 individuals over the past nine months.

Ansari’s arrest marks the final apprehension in the case, as seven others involved in the prison break were previously captured. Authorities had been tracking Ansari’s whereabouts based on recent information about his location.
