Political Leader Ishwar Pokharel’s Memoir “Mother, Dream and Stars” Launched

Former President Bidya Devi Bhandari has emphasized the need for writers to align their literary creations with the aspirations of the nation and its people. Speaking at the launch of Mother, Dream and Stars (Ama, Sapana Ra Taraharu), a memoir by senior vice-chair of the CPN (UML) Ishwar Pokharel, she highlighted the importance of connecting literature with political, economic, and social transformation.

“Writer Pokharel has significantly contributed to political transformation, party unity, organizational strengthening, and ideological development through his writings,” the former President remarked.

Nepali Congress (NC) General Secretary Biswo Prakash Sharma encouraged former presidents to champion social change rather than return to active politics. Reflecting on Pokharel’s journey, he noted the influence of his mother, who supported inter-caste marriage in an era when it was uncommon. “His mother’s belief in not causing hurt through words deeply inspired Pokharel,” Sharma added.

CPN (UML) Deputy General Secretary Pradeep Kumar Gyawali described the memoir as a vivid portrayal of 100 years of Nepali society, touching on themes such as family dynamics, social disintegration, and climate-driven migration. “The democracy and politics we experience today are the result of immense sacrifices made by individuals like Ishwar Pokharel and the silent endurance of mothers,” he said.

Dr. Bindu Sharma, an assistant professor and critic, praised the emotional depth and reflective honesty in the memoir. She noted its poignant depiction of Nepali mothers’ sacrifices and dedication.

In Mother, Dream and Stars, Pokharel presents his mother as a central figure in driving change and transformation. The book explores the evolving role of Nepali mothers within the context of societal shifts, blending surrealism with lived experiences.

Pokharel, who has previously authored works such as Purbako Rato Tara and Magh 19, continues to use his writings to reflect on Nepal’s political and social landscapes.
