Political turmoil rocks Lumbini province as UML-led government falls

Despite Lumbini Province Chief Minister Leela Giri’s efforts, the vote of confidence motion that was tabled for discussion in the Province Assembly on Monday did not receive enough support, resulting failure to retain his position.

His request for a vote of confidence was ultimately denied by a majority of lawmakers.

Chief Minister Giri’s proposed vote of confidence received the backing of 33 lawmakers, 29 of whom were from CPN-UML, with the remaining four representing Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP).

With 53 lawmakers voting against him, CM Giri was unable to secure the confidence of the Assembly.

The confirmation of Dilli Chaudhary as the new Chief Minister of Lumbini Province is now official following the dismissal of Giri from the post. Chaudhary, the leader of the Nepali Congress parliamentary party in the Lumbini Province Assembly, has submitted his claim for the position to Province Chief Amik Sherchan.
