Prachanda Flags Concern: Nepal’s Universities Emptying as Students Flock Abroad

Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ has sounded the alarm on a concerning trend affecting the nation’s educational landscape. He expressed concern that the country’s schools and universities are witnessing a decline in attendance due to the emigration of young students abroad.

During the opening of the International Book Exhibition, he highlighted that preventing this migration poses the most significant challenge. He emphasized that it is not only the country’s young workforce departing due to student migration but also the outflow of the nation’s wealth. Dahal stated, “To curb this migration promptly, we must optimize the education policy to be beneficial for the youth and promote Nepali students to pursue their education within the country’s schools and universities.”

Furthermore, he suggested that by implementing an education system that attracts foreign students to study in Nepal’s universities, the country can retain its financial resources. This, he believes, would reverse the outflow of money and instead bring foreign currency into Nepal. He stressed the need for a systematic program and action plan with a long-term strategy to achieve tangible results in this direction.

Dahal also acknowledged the role of businessmen engaged in private enterprises within the framework of government policies, rules, constitution, and laws, considering them as key contributors to the economic development of the country.

Additionally, he noted the challenges faced by the national economy, attributing them to the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, global polarization, conflicts, as well as Nepal’s own structural system, capacity, and performance.
