Presidential candidate through political consensus: Unified Socialist Chairperson Nepal

Chairperson of the CPN (Unified Socialist) Madhav Kumar Nepal has reiterated that the presidential candidate should be picked through a political consensus.

Speaking at a press conference organised here in Pokhara today by the Socialist Press Organisation, Kaski, the former Prime Minister said, “A search is underway for a President who can safeguard the democratic republic constitution.”

The Unified Socialist is not in favour of sharing the coveted portfolio with the CPN (UML), and there is a need to pick a new President who is acceptable to all, he viewed.

His party would not field a presidential candidate until there is a consensus, he said, adding that Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ was making efforts towards forging a national consensus on a new President who is acceptable to all. “Let’s see whether or not his efforts will pay off. There seems a political fluidity in the country. Let’s see where the political situation goes,” he said.

His party would not join the incumbent government at present, he clarified. Talks were underway with various leaders and parties including the Netra Bikram Chand-led party so as to unite and strengthen community party, he said.
