Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli to Lead Nepali Delegation to 79th UN General Assembly

Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli is set to depart for New York on Friday, where he will lead Nepal’s delegation to the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) at the UN Headquarters. The Prime Minister is scheduled to address the UNGA on September 26, focusing on this year’s theme, “Leaving No One Behind: Acting together for the advancement of peace, sustainable development and human dignity for present and future generations.”

According to a press release from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Prime Minister Oli will attend the Opening Session of the General Debate on September 24 and participate in a reception hosted by U.S. President Joseph Biden on September 25.

While in New York, the Prime Minister will address the Summit of the Future as the Chair of the Global Coordination Bureau of Least Developed Countries (LDCs). He will also speak at other high-level events, including a plenary meeting on the existential threats posed by rising sea levels and a meeting on antimicrobial resistance (AMR).

On September 23, Prime Minister Oli will deliver a keynote address on “Nepal’s Journey to Democracy and Economic Prosperity” at Columbia University. Additionally, he will speak at Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy Jr. Forum on September 27, with a focus on “Nepal’s Perspective: From Transitional Justice to Climate Justice.”

During his visit, Prime Minister Oli is also expected to meet with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and engage in bilateral discussions on the sidelines of the UNGA.

Accompanying him on the trip will be his spouse, Radhika Shakya, Foreign Minister Arzu Rana Deuba, Foreign Secretary Sewa Lamsal, and other senior government officials. The Prime Minister is expected to return to Kathmandu on September 30.
