Prime Minister Prachanda Reaffirms Commitment to National Interest in Recent Discussions

In a recent session of the House of Representatives, Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal, widely known as Prachanda, reiterated the government’s commitment to not engage in any agreements that go against the national interest. The statement was made during discussions on a bill aimed at amending the Constitutional Council (Works, Duties, Rights, and Work Procedures) Act, 2066 BS.

Addressing lawmakers’ concerns about his recent meeting with India’s Minister of External Affairs, S Jaishankar, Prachanda clarified that the discussions primarily focused on matters related to Nepal’s national interest and the recently signed electricity trade agreement with India. The Prime Minister emphasized that the electricity trade agreement, allowing Nepal to export 10,000 megawatts of power over the next decade, is in the country’s best interest.

Furthermore, Prachanda highlighted that decisions regarding projects involving up to Rs 200 million of investment are not solely made by India but involve bilateral partnerships, with Nepal having an active role in the decision-making process.

Responding to queries about concerns raised by the Indian Minister regarding a Chinese delegation’s visit to Nepal, Prachanda dismissed such claims, stating that the matter was not discussed during his meetings with S Jaishankar. He labeled the suggestions as “falsehood and propaganda” without any basis in truth.

During the session, the Prime Minister underscored the importance of unanimous consensus in amending the Constitutional Council Act, emphasizing that the proposed changes aim to address past issues and eliminate undesirable practices observed in constitutional appointments. The government’s commitment to ensuring the national interest remains at the forefront of diplomatic engagements and agreements.
