‘Production in Karnali, Business in Kathmandu’: Organic Market Opens in Kapan

A new initiative to promote organic agricultural products from across Nepal—including remote regions like Karnali—has taken shape in the capital. An ‘Organic Market’ has officially opened in Kapan, Budhanilkantha Municipality, aiming to connect rural producers with urban consumers.
The market features a variety of organic goods such as Jumla’s marsi rice, Humla’s beans, Mugu’s millet, and herbs from Dolpa. These products are sourced directly from local farmers and are part of a broader mission to promote organic farming and sustainable development across all 753 municipalities in the country.
Suman Dahal, the market’s founder, said the effort is based on the principle of “one local level, one product,” and seeks to both empower farmers and highlight the unique agricultural and handmade goods produced in Nepal’s seven provinces.
“This is more than just a market—it’s a platform to promote organic food, herbal cosmetics, spices, indigenous crafts, and local identity while supporting rural livelihoods,” Dahal told RSS.
The initiative is expected to contribute significantly to Nepal’s agriculture sector and rural development in the long term.
