Randhir Jaiswal Assumes Charge as Spokesperson of India’s MEA
In a significant development on Wednesday, Randhir Jaiswal officially assumed charge as the new spokesperson of the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) in India. Jaiswal, a seasoned diplomat belonging to the 1998 batch of the Indian Foreign Service, takes over the crucial role from Arindam Bagchi, who has been appointed as India’s permanent representative to the United Nations (UN) in Geneva.
During his illustrious diplomatic career spanning over two decades, Jaiswal has successfully handled key assignments in various countries, including Portugal, Cuba, South Africa, and at India’s permanent mission to the UN in New York. His wealth of experience positions him well for the responsibilities of MEA spokesperson.
Notably, Jaiswal has made significant contributions to the External Affairs Ministry in different capacities. He served as the deputy secretary overseeing relations with the United States and later as joint secretary, managing diplomatic ties with nations in western Europe. In mid-2017, he took on the role of joint secretary responsible for international relations, serving the President.
Jaiswal’s tenure as the consul general in New York, which began in July 2020, showcased his diplomatic finesse and commitment to promoting India’s interests on the global stage. As he steps into the role of the official spokesperson, Jaiswal is expected to bring his extensive diplomatic experience to effectively communicate India’s foreign policy and address international concerns.
The Ministry of External Affairs expressed confidence in Jaiswal’s abilities and thanked Arindam Bagchi for his valuable contributions during his tenure as the spokesperson. Bagchi’s new assignment as India’s permanent representative to the UN in Geneva is seen as a testament to his diplomatic acumen and will further strengthen India’s presence on the international diplomatic front.
