RSS Marks 64th Anniversary, Reaffirms Commitment to Reliable Journalism

Nepal’s national news agency, Rastriya Samachar Samiti (RSS), has entered its 64th year of service, reaffirming its dedication to providing accurate, impartial, and timely news. The anniversary coincides with the 75th Democracy Day, highlighting RSS’s deep-rooted connection to Nepal’s democratic journey.

RSS traces its origins to Rastriya Sambad Samiti, established on 7 Falgun 2018 BS (1962 AD) through the merger of two earlier agencies—Nepal Sambad Samiti (NSS) and Sagarmatha Sambad Samiti (SSN). This milestone marked the formalization of Nepal’s first national news agency, which was legally recognized following the enactment of the RSS Act in 2019 BS. Over six decades, RSS has played a pivotal role in shaping Nepal’s media landscape, serving as a primary source of national and international news for print and electronic media. Unlike some international counterparts that operate newspapers and broadcast stations, RSS focuses solely on news dissemination, ensuring reliable and fact-based journalism.

The media landscape has evolved beyond traditional print journalism, incorporating digital, audiovisual, podcast, and mobile-based news formats. Acknowledging this shift, RSS has embraced technological advancements to meet modern news consumption trends. “We recognize the challenges and opportunities posed by digital expansion and are committed to ensuring that RSS keeps pace with technological progress,” an official statement read. The agency now provides 24-hour Nepali news services, reflecting the media’s growing demand for real-time updates.

RSS remains committed to promoting national unity by highlighting Nepal’s diverse cultures, traditions, and developmental progress. Recognizing Nepal’s linguistic diversity, RSS has launched news services in Awadhi, Maithili, and Nepal Bhasa, ensuring inclusivity in media reporting. A media museum and bulletin room have been established for journalism research and studies, aiming to enrich Nepal’s media sector. RSS has also organized multiple photo exhibitions showcasing Nepal’s cultural heritage and the achievements of the republic. A photo book, titled RSS Photo Book: 16 Years of the Republic, is set for publication to document these exhibitions as a historical archive.

Looking ahead, RSS has pledged to expand and improve its services through training programs for journalists and technical personnel to keep up with global media trends. Investment in advanced photography and broadcasting equipment will ensure high-quality reporting. Continued collaboration with national and international media organizations will further strengthen Nepal’s media presence on the global stage.

RSS remains aware that it operates with public funding and has reaffirmed its commitment to serving both the state and the people with transparent, responsible, and high-quality journalism. As Nepal continues its democratic journey, RSS stands ready to evolve, ensuring that the media remains a powerful pillar of democracy and a reliable source of information for all.
