Sagarmatha Sambaad to Address Global and Regional Issues, Says PM Oli

Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has announced that the upcoming Sagarmatha Sambaad, scheduled for May 2025, will serve as a platform to deliberate on pressing global and regional challenges.
Speaking at a government-organized program to declare the dates for the event, PM Oli highlighted that the Dialogue aligns with Nepal’s commitment to fostering global understanding through dialogue, consensus, and collaboration. The first edition of this multi-stakeholder international forum will focus on the theme “Climate Change, Mountains, and the Future of Mankind.”
“This Dialogue is inspired by the shared interests and welfare of humanity,” said PM Oli. “Through this initiative, Nepal aims to contribute to the International Year of Glaciers’ Preservation (IYGP) declared by the United Nations.”
The prime minister underscored the Dialogue’s significance in addressing the rapid melting of glaciers, the preservation of natural resources, and raising awareness about the critical role of the Himalayas. He expressed concern about the unsustainable consumption and production patterns adopted by industrialized nations, which have exacerbated climate change and led to devastating consequences for nature and humanity.
“Our naked eyes can witness the fast-depleting ice coverage in the Himalayas. This is not merely a question of aesthetics or whether mountains remain photogenic. It is a matter of survival for people, societies, and cultures,” PM Oli remarked.
The prime minister referenced recent climate-induced disasters, such as the glacier lake outburst flood in Thame and the post-monsoon floods in Bagmati Province, to emphasize the growing frequency of such emergencies. “Nature’s fury has now become a routine phenomenon rather than rare occurrences,” he observed.
Despite Nepal’s minimal carbon footprint, PM Oli noted that the country faces severe climate impacts. However, Nepal remains committed to achieving net-zero emissions by 2045, expanding forests, promoting clean energy, and safeguarding biodiversity. “Our efforts alone cannot offset the historical complacency of those who bear greater responsibility for the climate crisis,” he said.
PM Oli emphasized Nepal’s unique role in addressing these issues. “Sagarmatha Sambaad will add value by sharing Nepal’s success stories, offering a unique historical perspective, and leveraging Nepal’s strategic location,” he explained. He also reaffirmed Nepal’s dedication to multilateralism, a rules-based international order, and cooperation on global challenges such as climate change, migration, and sustainable development.
The prime minister concluded by urging collective action to tackle the interconnected crises of climate change. “Together, we can forge a sustainable and equitable future – a future of resilience against poly-crisis,” PM Oli stated.
The Sagarmatha Sambaad represents Nepal’s commitment to bringing together global voices to address the challenges of climate change and ensure the survival and progress of humanity.
