Sandeep Lamichhane Denied Visa for T-20 World Cup; Alleges Repeat of 2019 Incident by US Embassy Nepal

Renowned Nepalese cricketer Sandeep Lamichhane has expressed disappointment after being denied a visa by the US Embassy in Nepal to participate in the upcoming T-20 World Cup scheduled to be held in the United States and the West Indies. Taking to Twitter, Lamichhane lamented the decision, drawing parallels to a similar incident in 2019.

In his tweet, Lamichhane pointed out the repeat denial of his visa, echoing a similar setback he faced in 2019. The rejection has stirred frustration among fans and supporters of Nepalese cricket, who were eagerly anticipating Lamichhane’s participation in the prestigious tournament.

Lamichhane, who was cleared of rape charges by an appeal court on Wednesday, May 15, was likely to be added to Nepal’s T20 World Cup 2024 squad. He was not included in the initial T20 World Cup squad announced by Nepal on May 1. With Lamichhane’s acquittal in the rape case, the Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) had lifted the suspension imposed on him.

“According to the decision of the honorable Patan High Court dated May 15, 2024, we inform you that the suspension of Sandeep Lamichhane from all domestic and international cricket activities has been lifted as the verdict has cleared Nepali National Cricket Team player Sandeep of the rape charges,” the statement issued by CAN reads.

Despite being cleared to play, Lamichhane’s dreams of representing his country on the global stage have been abruptly halted by the visa denial.
