Save Thamel Campaign: National Unity Campaign Protests Against Chinese Encroachment

The National Unity Campaign, Kathmandu, organized a large-scale rally in Thamel today, protesting against increasing Chinese commercial encroachment in the area. Under the slogan “Let’s protect local businesses, stop Chinese colonization!” the demonstration witnessed significant participation from local traders and entrepreneurs.
Led by National Unity Campaign Chairman Binay Yadav, protesters raised slogans such as “Stop forced Tibetization in Thamel!”, “Protect local trade, stop foreign manipulation!”, “Thamel belongs to us, trade belongs to us!”, and “Preserve Nepali identity, stop foreign interference!”
The rally was attended by hundreds of Thamel-based traders, including Chandra Yadubanshi, the campaign’s central secretariat chief, and Manish Purve, a central member. Concluding the demonstration, Chairman Yadav emphasized that Thamel, as a major tourist and commercial hub, should prioritize local traders. However, he warned that rising Chinese influence was leading to the displacement of Nepali entrepreneurs.
Yadav stressed the urgency of stopping China’s commercial expansion to preserve Thamel’s original identity and prevent foreign domination. He cautioned that if the government fails to intervene, the risk of local traders being forced out will only escalate.
Previously, the National Unity Campaign has opposed China’s commercial and territorial encroachment in Nepal. Local businessmen in Thamel have urged the government to take decisive action, asserting that Nepali businesses are being threatened due to increasing Chinese influence.
The protest remained peaceful, but participants made it clear that they would continue their movement until Chinese dominance is curtailed and Nepali traders’ rights are safeguarded.
